What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns are porcelain caps that fit snugly over permanent, natural teeth. Bridges are two crowns with an artificial tooth in between. They fill in gaps associated with tooth loss. The Strauss Dental team uses a personalized, luxurious approach to care as each patient gets extensive facetime with their dentist.

What are crowns and bridges used for?

Crowns and bridges are often used to repair or replace teeth that are:

  • Decaying
  • Loose
  • Missing
  • Cracked
  • Discolored
  • Misshapen
  • Worn down
  • Too small
  • Jagged
  • Unsightly

Strauss Dental is a community-based, patient-centered practice that offers premium care for beautiful smiles.

What should I expect during treatment?

The treatment you can expect during crown or bridge placement depends on which procedure you require. The first step is an oral health evaluation. Your dentist reviews your medical history and completes a comprehensive dental exam. They also use X-rays to determine which treatment is right for you.

If you have missing teeth your dentist might place dental implants — artificial tooth roots — into your jawbone. After about three to four months of healing, they attach a crown to the implants to perfect your smile. Crowns can also fit over your natural teeth.

Bridges can attach to existing teeth or implants. They consist of multiple crowns that fill in gaps formed by missing permanent teeth. Porcelain veneers are like crowns but cover just the front part of a tooth, not its entire surface.

How should I care for my new crown or bridge?

After a crown or bridge placement, your new tooth restoration is long-lasting. It looks and functions just like natural teeth. Care for your teeth by not chewing on ice, popcorn kernels, and other hard objects. Floss every day and brush at least twice daily.

See the Strauss Dental team for routine cleanings and dental exams, and call the office right away if a crown or bridge becomes loose or breaks.
